005: Throwing Snow
3 September, 2010

Mixtape 005 is brought to us by one of the UK’s hot upcoming talents, Throwing Snow.

For those that aren’t familiar with the name Throwing Snow, rest assured you soon will be. With several releases under his belt on a broad collection of labels, some sick remixes of people including Greymatter, Gold Panda and Hyetal and most recently being able to claim the first ever release on Alexander Nut’s brand new label Ho_Tep, things are happening fast for Ross Tones. If you’ve heard any of his music then I’m sure that this will come as no surprise to you. Serving up a sound that draws influence from Future Garage, UK Funky, Dubstep, Wonky Hip-Hop and even Post-Rock, saying that Throwing Snow is a talented producer is a slight understatement. Have a listen to his remix of Kid Kanevil and his track with vocalist Jessie Moncrieff (both included in his TDS mixtape) and you’ll understand.

Ross is a hard working chap. Writing music, doing remixes, working as a professional music consultant and running his own experimental music label called A Future Without and yet he seemed rather chilled in the midst of a busy afternoon. Such a dedicated, focused person is bound for success.

The mixtape is a journey through dance floor bangers to the more chilled and experimental sounds, drawing for some big names such as Ramadanman, MJ Cole and Floating Points and splashed with a few unreleased gems for good measure. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as we do!

What approach have you taken for this mix?
“I recorded it over the August Bank holiday so I was kind of in carnival vibes … well actually a bit hungover on the Monday morning to be precise. I kinda just took it from there really, but I knew I wanted to drop the Splinters tune and my remix of Kid Kanevil to link the carnival tunes and the deeper stuff … so it’s kind of in two sections.”

Which track or mix is your personal favourite?
“That’s a hard question to answer on the tune side … I love them all for different reasons, they each give me subtly different bass faces I suppose. On the mix side, I think I like the first mix cos I hadn’t done it before and it just kinda worked …”

What did you do the mix on?
“It’s all vinyl and a little bit of Final Scratch 1 on a dodgy old laptop, some pretty ropey decks through an amp that we’ve had to set up as mono (don’t ask) … you have to hang on to the mix for dear life, but it makes it more entertaining I suppose.”

Is style important to you?
“Haha….I can’t really compete with Miles Davis’ quote on this can I, but yes most definitely. I’ve got a bit of a trainer and T-shirt obsession but it’s all a healthy habit I promise.”

What brand(s) are you particularly feeling at the moment?
“Errr Super Superficial, T Shirt Party, DBD (Chris is a badman), Clae, The North, and Seven 7 in Bristol.”

I’ve just tested it and on my connection it is predicted to take roughly 45 minutes (so probably a bit less) to download. It must be either your connection or a bad day for SoundCloud, who host our downloads. Might be worth trying again in a day or so if you haven’t already fixed it. Hope that helps.

[...] After bursting onto the scene in 2010 with his split 12″ release on Infrasonics, Jamie Grind has become an increasingly recognised name and has popped up time and time again on track lists. A further release on Fortified Audio and and a stack of remixes have helped secure him as a name to keep an eye on. Keep your eyes locked for the release of his forthcoming EP on Wicked Bass, which sees two previous The Daily Street mixtape artists step up to the remix responsibilities; Hackman and Throwing Snow.
