Today, another artist takes over the walls of Studio55, the constantly changing art space above 55DSL’s Newburgh Street store. This time, that artist is photographer Gavin Watson, who will exhibit a selection of his photography in celebration of the release of his T-shirt in the 55DSL 10.55mm Photography Series.
Gavin’s photography ‘career’ began as a youth in High Wycombe, photographing his brother Neville and the company they both kept. Gavin’s work is now considered the seminal insight into one of our country’s most interesting and unique subcultures and has gone on to influence many prominent photographers and directors, including the Shane Meadows (responsible for This Is England) – some of his photos were recently put together to create the amazing ‘Skins & Punks’ book, a detailed photographic account of life within punk and skinhead culture in 1980s Britain.
The T-shirt itself is white, comes with a black and white print of the above photograph printed large across the chest, and is limited to 1055 pieces. The exhibition opens tonight, November 4th at Studio55, and continues until the 21st of the month. The T-shirt will be available from the 55DSL store also. I’m particularly stoked on this one as punk and skinhead culture has always been huge interest of mine, and with a first hand insight like Gavin’s, this is sure to be good.
