This weekend, Nike and their 6.0 division are set to launch a pretty exciting BMX centered project, simply titled ‘The Pool’. The project has seen the brand transform a disused swimming pool in Barking and Dagenham, scheduled for demolition, into a world class BMX park, set to rival the best parks in the world.
The Pool will be put to the test at the launch this weekend, by 10 teams of BMX riders, each led by one of the world’s best, and it looks like it’s going to be a pretty impressive show. The Pool will be open to the public from Monday the 16th, and will be put to good use by local schools and youth groups getting their first taste of the sport, under the watchful eye of experienced BMX coaches, as well as amateur riders and pros of the future, with plenty of free bikes available for use. This is an awesome project from Nike, and will draw a lot of attention to the sport of BMX in the UK, as well as a great facility for BMX fans in the surrounding area.
When The Pool closes it’s doors on June 12th, all of the bikes are to be donated to local schools and community groups, as a way of continuing the interest of the kids who’ve enjoyed it’s short time in their town. I’m definitely going to try and make a stop at The Pool sometime this month, just as a spectator though ‘mind. Check out some pictures below, and if you’d like to head down, you can find all the information on facebook at Nike 6.0 BMX UK, and the details of Monday’s public launch event can be found here.
