This month, the behemoth that is A Bathing Ape introduce another of their limited collaborations, this time joining ‘forces’ with George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise on 6 new T-shirt designs, featuring characters and scenes from the epic film saga, re-envisioned in the japanese brand’s trademark cartoon style.
I think it’s safe to say that the new designs definitely appeal to those in a niche within a niche – unless Bape addicted Star Wars fans are more common than I’d have thought – but I’m sure they’ll please both Bape and Star Wars collectors alike. The designs themselves are pretty funny too, ranging from a flip on the classic movie poster, to an interpretation of my personal favourite moment, the Sarlacc battle.
I’ve always thought that Bape were a bit lazy when it came to T-shirt graphics, regurgitating the same illustrations with no real creative flair, and despite the added spice of the Star Wars theme, this one hasn’t done much to change my mind, so I’ll be passing this time. Those who are keen however, can expect to pick these up in the UK, exclusively at the London Bape Store, as they won’t be available online. The collection launches September 17th, in men’s, women’s and kid’ sizes.
