For the latest instalment of oki-ni’s STYLED series, things have been swayed towards the more misguided side of life as Tom Stubbs brings his flare to the series.
The shoot is based around Peter Doyle’s book ‘Crooks Like Us’, which documents the lives of Sydney’s notorious underworld in the 1920s. The book delves beneath the pavements and along dark passages to uncover the lives of suspected cocaine dealers, murderers, and miscreants. What better a subject to use as the basis for a tailored menswear shoot?
oki-ni worked closely for this shoot with stylist, tailoring specialist, and style journalist Tom Stubbs to seamlessly weave together high end suiting and the violent mindset of some of histories most feared criminals. As a photographer myself, I look at these images and instantly love them; forget menswear, these are incredible portraits in their own right. The lighting is some of the best I’ve seen in a long time, as if these ‘criminals’ are giving us only a glimpse of their world, whilst remaining in the shadows. The outfits are timeless, convincing enough to work with a 1920’s inspired shoot, whilst also leaving me wanting to put them together, now knowing I wont be feeling as though I’m off to a fancy dress party.
Huge congratulations to both oki-ni and Tom Stubbs, who have done an incredible job!
