On Saturday, 30th June 2012 Nike’s very own World Basketball Festival will be held in London. Taking place in Brixton, now a basketball mecca for the UK, this basketball showcase is a one day celebration of everything that makes the game of basketball so great, from the game itself to the culture that surrounds it.
The day features a variety of scheduled events that allow the community to participate in and enjoy. There’s basically two parts to the day. Firstly, the free daytime events take place in Windrush Square from 8am-9pm, which sees the place transformed in to a full size basketball court equipped with bleachers for spectators. The day consists of athlete clinics, hosted by international players and coaches, 3-on-3 competitions, open participation pick-up games and high energy slam dunk contests. There is also an great opportunity for the public to try out Nike’s new Nike+ basketball range, which sees the digital Nike+ technology associated with running cross over in to the basketball world, allowing ballers to measure their performance. Finally the day will end with a 5-on-5 match up between Team Nike from New York and an GB all-star team.
The events will continue into the evening over at Brixton’s 02 Academy, where the day will be rounded off with a showcase of music and more basketball activities. The evening event requires a ticket (unlike the free day activities), where Big Boi of Outkast, with support from local rising star Dot Rotten, the Miami Heat Street Band and UK dance crew Unity, provide the music for the night. On-stage international dunkers Guy Dupuy aka ‘Easy Jumper’, Kendall Boyd-Hill aka ‘Kasper’ and the final of the UK Slam Dunk contest will provide the basketball entertainment alongside the music events. Tickets can be purchased here and are priced at £5 each, with all proceeds going to the Luol Deng Basketball Foundation.
