The Air Max ’97 is the kind of design that evokes feelings of love or hate. Either way, there always seems to be a reverence for this shoe. Inspired by Japan’s ‘Shinkansen’ high speed railway lines, also known as the “bullet train”, the design of the AM97 is pretty garish on first sight, but once you understand the inspiration behind the aesthetics it all starts to make a little more sense. The metallic silver upper still feels futuristic today, with a combination of leather and 3M reflective lines that really capture a feeling of speed and movement.
On this release, we see all of those classic elements completely refreshed with a Hyperfuse makeover that lends very well to the futurist design of the AM97. Minus the leather upper construction and the addition of Nike’s Hyperfuse composite technology, we see a transformation of the shape in to a more slimline affair, with less of a bulky edge than the original. The metallic silver is as dominant as ever but is accented with that familiar red swoosh and black detailing. Combined with the full length exposed Air Unit, this Hyperfuse release renovates the Air Max 97 and restores some nostalgia of a running classic that shouldn’t be forgotten.
