Newly named artist Lorenz System has given away this 9 track EP (album) as a free download, and it makes for essential listening.
Ever shifting in sound and name, Nathan Spooner, aka Beacon, aka Lorenz System is somewhat like a modern day Prince – changing his name regularly and shifting his style as the mood takes him. However, it seems like finally he has found a place of comfort with this new Lorenz System project. The tunes seem much more developed and the output is really really strong. Usually with any kind of free download EP, there’s the usual weak tracks that have been thrown in due to reduced quality control, but this 9 track album doesn’t really have those. It’s an album that kind of works backwards, opening with 2K40, a hard hitting, 80’s influenced number before moving deeper and deeper, lead by Coming Back Home, which is a masterpiece.
The album has a wealth of depth to it and a decent amount of variation. Meet Me in Montreal has a haunting quality to it, with it’s looping vocals and entrancing percussion. Title track The Other U returns to the 80’s aesthetic of the opening track, putting some classic synth and drum sounds to great use.
