The 998 design from New Balance has spent some time in spotlight of late. It’s a model that looks like a composite of New Balance’s classic models, such as the 577 and 1500 which makes sense of why it’s getting a little more attention than usual. Whatever the combination is, the 998 is a thing of beauty and this grey/red colourway, an original make-up, is back for AW12.
This release has all of the elements that make a New Balance shoe so great, and then some. Made in the USA, this 998 reissue is another example as to why footwear fanatics love the UK and US made New Balance shoes. High quality materials, a smooth looking shape and precision finishing are all evident here and the price reflects that high quality craftsmanship, coming in at £140. This 998 was a pioneer of a now classic running shoe material combination of suede and mesh uppers, and on this release it feels and looks just as good as ever. The colour selection of grey and red (more burgundy/deep red) has a classic feel and reminds us that running shoes can still break necks without the need for neon colours. New Balance branding can be found on the side and heel of the shoe and the branding on the tongue, with the model number and ‘Made In USA’ stamp of approval, finishes things off.
