In a highly unpredictable move, PUMA have decided to reissue the R698 ‘Bluefield’ from their first collection with BWGH, less than 2 years after it first came out.
I have to be honest here, I was a little shocked when I saw this news, not only because I’m still getting used to this emerging trend of reissuing coveted collaborations from the past, or that I think it’s way too soon to be reissuing this specific collab, but also that the folks at PUMA have decided to call it the BWGH x PUMA R698 ‘Bluefield’ OG. Surely this sneaker doesn’t have OG status yet? Surely a collaboration can’t be an OG? Correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as I was concerned the term OG referred to the originals, to the colourway that started things. I mean yes, this I guess is the OG of the PUMA x BWGH legacy, except that project hasn’t been running long enough to call it a legacy. Maybe it this was 8 years further down the line, then I would be able to accept this.
Well, ranting aside, this provides a good opportunity for those who missed this drop the first time around to get involved and fill the gaps in the collection. It will also be painful for anyone who paid over-the-odds for the “OG” pair on the second-hand market. It’s a great shoe, it really is, but this decision is too soon and doesn’t warrant the OG tag… yet.
Head over to Hanon to pick these up when they drop at midnight tonight for £109.
On a side note… Watch our video with BWGH founder David Obadia talking about his inspirations behind this sneaker (the first time around).
