With the much loved Nike Air Huarache dropping as a Quick Strike this Friday, we thought it about time we dug out another of our vintage print adverts. This time it’s the 1992 “HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR FOOT TODAY?” Air Haurache classic.
It’s one of the early examples of those bold typeface dominated adverts that Nike ran throughout the early 1990s and has returned at the forefront of the upcoming Air Huarache OG 2013 Retros. This style of advert has become synonymous mainly with the Air Max 90 Infrared, but it was also used for the Air Huarache amongst others, as seen here. Featuring yet another of Nike’s brilliantly catchy tag lines, the advert asks “HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR FOOT TODAY?” before subtly explaining that the Air Huarache “stretches with your foot”. This striking campaign was created by Nike’s long term advertising agency partners Wieden+Kennedy, the folks behind the JUST DO IT and Mars Blackmon Air Jordan campaigns, who have been working on the Nike account since their inception in 1982. You could say that Dan Wieden and David Kennedy are responsible for a large part of the public image that Nike so strongly holds now.
This exact advert hails from 1992 and is a beautiful example of minimal, powerful advertising done well. One of Nike’s and Wieden+Kennedy’s specialities. Although it features the White/Black/Grape colourway of the Air Huarache, which unfortunately isn’t in the upcoming QS pack, we still thought it was a good time to dig this out from our personal archives and let you guys have a ganders, especially as this advert is now being rehashed to rebirth the Air Huarache once again in (almost) all it’s glory.
