Today we present the work of another young talent from Birmingham, Gift Gwambe, with his latest project ‘Dawn of the Bathing Apes’ exclusively for THE DAILY STREET.
The UK is a hotbed of talent, as it always has been, and it’s too easy to get lost in the bright lights of London. Based in Coventry and Birmingham, Gift Gwambe is good proof as to why you should look outside of just London to find young talent (note to self).
At a time when streetwear has never been stronger, Gift has decided to focus on some of the pioneers of modern streetwear culture from around the world. Taking key inspiration from Japanese staple BAPE, the shoot is a way for Gift to explore a select chosen few brands and their powerful iconic natures, using some of his favourite vintage bits from each brand.
“It focuses on the origin of the iconic brands, starting with the fashion brand BAPE, named after the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. The shoot consists of two other iconic and trending streetwear brands, Supreme and Champion. The idea behind the shoot is that we are in the world of the planet of the apes and the brand Bape is the identity of the fictional apes from the movies. The other two brands, Supreme and Champion, are shown as two different types of ape – a champion ape (Bape and champion) and a Supreme ape (Bape and Supreme).”
The setting is kept simple, placing the focus on the clothing, model, and lighting, allowing the layering and contrasting patterns and colours to take priority.
